If you’re in the parking lot of Carlsbad Caverns on a donut.
Their driving caught my attention first - repeatedly stopping in the middle of the road to take pictures when there are several cars behind you is...let’s just start with rude. Still, I hope they made it to wherever they were going because that’s not a great part of the country to get stranded.

reminds me of a couple we talked to on hole in the rock road. its 40 something miles of this
They were in a nissan rogue or similar with a flat tire about 5 miles in. I highly recommended that they put the spare on (a donut) and go BACK to town to get a replacement for the regular tire and try again and to NOT proceed on the donut. I mean...The real tire blew out because of the road, why would the temporary donut fair better? I sure hope they made it out okay because its not forgiving country.

Stopping in the middle of the road around there is a good way to get punted by an oil truck.

The state highways in the Carlsbad/Artesia/Hobbs areas are so loooooong and boooooring. (And because oil, smelly.)
I was once headed back to Cruces from Lubbock 21 years ago (holy crap I’m old) and caught myself outside of Artesia doing over 100 without intending to.
(Edit: oh wait, 1997 was 22 years ago, not 21. REALLY old.)

Hah. Yep, I just did 1300 miles from Denver to Lamesa, TX to Carlsbad and then home. Lots and lots of smelly nothing.

No cell service out there, either, right? I drove down a paved road a bit further east and it was a good couple hours of nothing. Not sure if it’s because I have a much newer phone now or because oilfields usually have the ability to push for coverage but this trip was a lot better. Only 30-45 minutes without.

Well at least they had the foresight to put the doughnut on the back.
Realizing as I’m typing that it’s probably just that the rear tire went flat.
I'm going to somewhat blame the owners manual for this. Some of them say it's totally okay to finish your trip on your spare. Except this means you're consuming valuable cargo space with your full-size flat, and also you don't have a spare.
